THE TEMPEST
Magic Coordinator
Directed and Adapted by Aaron Posner & Teller
Round House Theatre, 2022
An unforgettable reimagining of Shakespeare’s most enchanting romance features haunting music from the catalog of iconic songwriter Tom Waits and mind-bending moves from Pilobolus, as well as astonishing feats of magic. Arriving just in time for the holiday season, the dazzling production—a smash hit in Boston, Chicago, and Las Vegas—“awakens in the audience a sense of pleasurable, almost childlike wonder,” says The New York Times. “Enormously entertaining,” raves the Chicago Tribune. Produced in collaboration with Folger Theatre.
Ryan was the Magic Coordinator and Ariel Understudy for this one of a kind production. He was in charge of setting up, maintaining, and executing all of the apparatus for each stage illusion incorporated into this production designed by Teller and Johnny Thompson. During the rehearsal process, Ryan worked closely alongside magician and actor Nate Dendy, to learn the secrets behind the magic and even collaborated on creating a new effect for the D.C premiere.
Reviews:
“Working with magic coordinator Ryan Phillips, Teller has created an amazing spectacle, wielding illusions that seem real and yet impossible. A body levitating. Another dissapearing. An Actor’s body seemingly contorted into impossible shapes. And lots of smaller sleights of hand.” - The Washington Post
“The Tempest at Round House Theatre is big, bold, and magical! The show is brimming with tricks, a feast for the eyes and ears, and more than the sum of its exceptional parts.”- DC Theater Arts
“The Tempest” at Round House Theatre, produced in collaboration with Folger Theatre, is a diverting new adaptation of a Shakespearian classic. Half-story and half-spectacle, onstage magic enriches the sorcery of Prospero and the band of singer-musicians gives voice to the mystic, spirit-possessed island. This accessible comedy offers an ideal opportunity for anyone hoping to dip their toes in or swim deeper into the works of Shakespeare.”- MD Theatre Guide
